Deleted or Alternate Scenes.

This is the original draft of screens 34-41. Most of the changes were inspired by a fear that the pacing was getting bogged down after several screens of talking heads while Liz convalesced on Bill's sofa.

The formatting gets a little messy as I try to jam it in this blog. The original draft offers a little more character development and profanity:

Screen 34 - 35

Bill, Yasu, and Liz are in a music store, shopping through CDs.

CAPTION: November 12, 1996. My favorite record store. Carina and I were spending every night together since we had met. My days were spent hanging out with Liz.

LIZ

So you mean you two still haven’t sealed the deal?

BILL

Um, we, uh, we’ve sealed stuff.

LIZ

Yeah, but have you done the deed?

YASU

No way.

LIZ

Yasu is shaking his head. What is the hold up? Is it Carina?

She does not strike me as the chaste type.

BILL

She’s practically begging me for it.

LIZ

Bill, you do realize she is into you because of your power?

Peculiars are drawn to more powerful peculiars.

BILL

She’s crazy about me, Liz.

LIZ

That is because you boost her magic. She probably gets a

buzz just hanging out with you. I know I do. Have you told

her about you and Yasu yet?

BILL

Not exactly.

LIZ

You are such a pussy. Come on, you have to fessup and come

clean. If any chick would be cool with it, it’s her. She’s a

freakin’ witch.

BILL

I’ll think about it.

LIZ

Oh they have Whale! Have you heard these guys? They are

the bee’s knees.

Screen 36

CAPTION: November 15, 1996.

Bill and Carina are seated together on the couch. Yasu is seated on the floor in front of the television. There is an open bottle of wine on the coffee table and two glasses.

BILL

So Liz thinks we should do it.

CARINA

It, it?

BILL

Yeah.

CARINA

Very insightful, that lady. She might be the most magnificent

person I know.

BILL

I think you’re pretty magnificent, yourself.

They kiss. Bill takes her hand to lead her back to the bedroom.

CARINA

Should I turn off the TV?

BILL

Nope.

CARINA

Of course not. Bill never turns off his television.

YASU

Could’ya turn’t to fifty-eight before ya go?

Bill grabs the remote and changes the channel.

BILL

Do you have protection? Or should I--

CARINA

I’ve got it covered.

Screen 37

CAPTION: Elsewhere.

Stainman’s eyes are closed. They open. His eyes dilate.

STAINMAN

Yesss!

It is a dark room. Candles. He begins to cast a spell.

STAINMAN

Oh Lords of Bone and Ash, hear your servant’s prayer. Guide

me. Guide your proud servant to the power, to the fork-soul

your servant seeks. That your servant might consume this

life-force to better serve thee. Oh, Lords of Bone and Ash,

hear the words of my prayer--

The Blonde Waitress’s corpse is seated before him. His spell animates the body. Her eyes fill with black and she begins to speak with a strange voice.

CORPSE

Eeeeeahhhhst. East by south-east. Fifteen and one third miles.

Make haste.

Screen 38

This page is different. The gutters are white and the edges of the panels are blurred. There are empty word balloons, but there is no text in the balloons. The only text on the page is the song from the car radio: TBD.

A tiny blue car on the a city street. Carina is driving. Bill is in the passenger seat and Yasu is seated in the back.

Bill notices a kid with a doll in a car net to him. He sees an old man picking his nose.

Then a tanker-truck turns over in front of them and they crash.

Bill and Carina crash through the windshield severely injured.

Screen 39

CAPTION: November 16, 1996.

Bill awakens from his nightmare. He appears shaken. He is sleeping with Carina. He rises and steps out into the living room.

Where Yasu has fallen asleep in front of the televivion.

BILL

Yasu? Hey, buddy. Are you asleep? You alright?

Yasu opens his eyes.

YASU

Had the worst nightmare.

Bill and Yasu are in the kitchen. Bill is brewing coffee.

CAPTION: Later.

We had shared the nightmare. Yasu had never slept before. He had never dreamed.

YASU

She’s doin’ somethin’ to us.

BILL

What?

YASU

When she healed Liz, she thought her magic got a boost

because Liz‘s a werewolf. It was our power. We super-

charged her spell.

BILL

I don’t think it’s intentional.

YASU

But what’s it doin’ to us? More specifically, to me?

Carina enters.

CARINA

Mmm. That coffee smells heavenly.

Screen 40 - 41

Carina and Bill kiss. Bill hands Carina a mug.

CARINA

Good morning, lover.

BILL

Morning.

CARINA

Last night was—

Suddenly, Stainman explodes through the wall and window. Debris scatters around the room.

YASU

Holy shit!

CARINA

Stand back.

Yasu moves behind Bill. Carina steps in front of Bill.

STAINMAN

You are outmatched here, witch.

CARINA

Really?

Carina begins to cast a spell. Her hands begin to flare with energy.
